The x-rays show the true damage. A serious amount of bone has
been lost where the remaining implants are and in the area where there was another
implant. The loss of this bone precludes any easy solutions for retreating this
patient. She is currently being evaluated by an oral surgeon for the removal
of the failing implants, a costly and painful procedure.
The fact of the matter is that even when a root form implant
does fail, it fails with very little residual damage and it is usually easy
to replace. I would much rather work with a system that has little potential
for long term damage than a subperiosteal system. Blade implants can also cause
excessive damage and some designs can be very difficult to remove.
