Two-Stage Implant Placement

Description

In a two stage procedure, the implant is surgically placed and covered over with the gum tissue. Three or four months later, the gum tissue is opened and a second piece is screwed into the implant to allow the soft tissue to heal around the site. The teeth can then be made or attached.

Advantages

The implant remains protected throughout healing and there are some people that believe this might be advantageous.

Disadvantages

Requires a second surgery. Additional time is necessary for healing from the second stage surgery.

Recommendations

Acceptable
